History of Region 7B Oregon Battle of the Books

2022 : After a two year hiatus due to Covid, regional tournaments make an appearance but only online.   The Jefferson County Library hosts a 15-team virtual tournament that consists of teams from Deschutes and Jefferson Counties. 

 2023 : With regional tournaments in person for the first time in three years, a need for a second Grades 3-5 regional is needed in Central Oregon.  

The executive board of the Oregon Battle of the Books creates the 7B region that comprises the following counties : Jefferson, Grant, Harney and Deschutes County.  

South Wasco (Maupin) is grandfathered in due to its proximity to the newly elected region.  

Bend-La Pine School district and all of the independent and private schools located in that district form Region 7A.

The Performing Arts Center in Madras hosts the first 7B Regional Tournament. 

 The Buff Bears defeat the Crane Mustangs in the gold medal match to earn a berth to state. While the Little Prospectors of Humbolt (John Day) turn away the Outlaws of Sisters to take home bronze. 

2024 : The regional tournament turns to Warm Springs.  A member of the Confederate Tribe of Warm Springs performs multiple round dances, to usher in the event.   

18 teams compete for a spot to state. 

After taking bronze the year before, Humbolt punched their ticket to Salem by defeating the Eagles of Steins Pillar (Prineville).  

The bronze medal match witnesses an all Redmond School District final. In the end, Tom McCall defeats Sage Owls to earn the last spot on the podium.  

 2025 : Culver is the host school.  With 20 teams registered to compete, the 7B regional is scheduled to be the most highly competitive in tournament history.
